Matthew McGuinness/"Casper Disasters"/Greene Contemporary/01.07.09
Matthew McGuinness will be showing new silkscreens from his continuing series, Casper Disasters, in an exhibition at Greene Contemporary from Thursday January 8, 2009 through Sunday February 8, 2009 with an opening reception on Wednesday January 7, 2009 from 6-9 p.m. This exhibition will make use of the space in new and dynamic ways.
In the Casper Disaster series, McGuinness transforms reality into fantasy. He starts his process by scouring the world wide web for images taken during the second war in Iraq. These images are unfamiliar ones; taken by a soldier or civilian and usually anonymously published. During the second part of the process, McGuinness takes digital snapshots of these images and lets ghost-like forms emerge from the images of physical destruction and emotional disaster. The ensuing work marks his commentary on this particular war.
Matthew McGuinness received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1999. He currently lives and works in New York. He was recently featured in Ones To Watch, in the October 2008 issue of Details Magazine, as well as being part of Defining A Moment at the 2008 House of Campari in New York City, curated by Simon Watson and Craig Hensala of Scenic.
