Steven Lopez Launches The After Midnight Series - First Installment Features Erykah Badu!

Respected Los Angeles artist Steven Lopez will begin work on his latest piece in the “After Midnight Series” featuring soul goddess Erykah Badu. The After Midnight Series is a personal excursion for Steven to combine his two passions, music and art. It is this combination that has inspired the After Midnight Series and in the process brought Steven together with such musical greats as Chaka Kahn, Sade Adu, Aretha Franklin, India Arie, Jill Scott and his first inspiration into the After Midnight Series, Erykah Badu. Steven researches each artist’s photo history, discography, and live performances to begin the creative process. Once versed visually and aurally,Steven selects a favorite and many times inspirational song to focus on and begin the painting process. His manner of painting synergistically with music is heavily influenced and constantly nurtured at the world famous Mint Club in Los Angeles where he performs his craft in front of a live jazz audience regularly. Jazz, soul, funk, and hip hop are all ingrained into Steven’s artistic style beginning with his days as a respected graffiti artist and to his current exploits as a contemporary artist with a unique vision. Steven works with many of the top agencies, brands, and record labels
including Reebok, Nestle, X Games, Coachella, Vans, the United Way, Global Inheritance, and Spy Optics among others. His art has also been featured on such networks as BBC, The Discovery Channel and FUEL TV among others.

Steven is excited and honored to work with Erykah Badu, saying “Erykah is one of my favorite artists of all time and I’ve been looking forward to interpreting her music since I saw her perform in 2005 during the “Sugar Water” tour stop at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles.”

The After Midnight Series will include 100 limited edition giclee prints signed by both Steven and Erykah. The signing will take place on March 24th in Badu’s home town of Dallas. They will be available for purchase, Midnight April 15th exclusively through www.aftermidnightsoul.com.

A portion of proceeds will be donated to Badu’s charity organization, Beautiful Love Incorporated Non Profit Development—or B.L.I.N.D. Beautiful Love Inc. was established in 1997 and provides community-driven development for inner-city youth through music, dance, theater and visual arts.

SYSTEM OVERLOAD: The Ryan Ginness Renaissance

Ryan McGinness is about to take the normative rules of engagement to an exponential level of assault. First up are two tasty new books for his product-hungry fans -- No Sin/No Future (Ginko Press), and the bound, two-volume package, Aesthetic Comfort (Arkitip). Next comes the concurrent presentation of a major exhibition of his latest paintings and sculptures at Deitch Projects, and a volume of his hybridized graphic-art achievements taken from the past three years (Rizzoli) -- both aptly titled Ryan McGinness Works. The Deitch exhibition includes a monumental mural grid of 45 individuated panels, bent laser-cut acrylic sculptures, a stunning suite of seven color spectrum paintings, the mesmeric black on black monochromes and a black-light installation that amps up his most eye-poking fluorescents to a psychedelic frenzy.

Having fully embraced the ornate over the concise, once a primary characteristic of his art, McGinness continues to push the experiential dimensions of installation while investigating the modular and serial dynamics of the multiple. "I choose the restriction of formalism to create a kind of design problem-solving in my art," he admits, "but working on the computer where there is no original drawing and everything is infinitely scalable, reproducible and re-combinative, I've also become interested in the overlap between the production and reproduction of art." If anyone can translate that overlap in visual terms, it's McGinness.

The Armory Show New York 2009: DAY 1

In its 11th year, The Armory Show New York presents 243 international galleries over a four day period. Many galleries are devoting their stands to single artist presentations. Ronald Feldman Fine Arts for instance is presenting The Volksboutique Armory Apothecary by Christine Hill, where visitors will have the opportunity to describe their maladies to the artist, who will prescribe remedies for a small fee.

This video captures the opening reception which is taking place as I type this synopsis. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend but it looks as if a good time was had my all who attended.

Chris Burden's art show delayed due to lack of "Gold"=FAILED.com

Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills announced today that Saturday's opening of a new work by Chris Burden, "One Ton, One Kilo," has been postponed indefinitely while the search continues for 220 pounds -- or about $3.3 million worth -- of gold bars needed to assemble the piece.

As we reported Monday, the stash Gagosian and Burden had secured for the exhibition got caught up in a civil action that federal authorities have brought against alleged Ponzi schemer R. Allen Stanford. His assets, including Stanford Coins and Bullion, the company that sold Gagosian the required gold, have been frozen by court order.

"We're working on securing the gold we need for the exhibition," Michelle Pobar, a Gagosian spokeswoman, told Culture Monster today. "We are hopeful to open within a week or two, so please stay tuned."

JAMEL SHABAZZ ( As told to Tyrus Rochell Townsend)

An “urban legend”, Jamel Shabazz name is synonymous with photography and also with the New York Times Bestsellers list; he has been on that list 3 times. A 30 year veteran who cites Gordon Parks, James Van Der Zee, Robert Capa, Chester Higgins and Eli Reed as inspiration, Shabazz has worked with The Studio Museum of Harlem, The Rush Philanthropic Foundation, toured extensively throughout the US and across Europe and even made time to mentor youth in photography as well as career planning. More importantly, Shabazz is famous for capturing early black life during the 70s, 80s and 90s and reminding of times passed.

I was able to catch up with Shabazz as he had just completed the Scion Installation 5 Tour and right before he was about to jet to Paris for a show. The day is an ordinary Monday and the time is around 4pm. The locations are different; he in Brooklyn and I in Harlem. Separated by a bridge but connected by spirit.

Giacomo Balla: "Flight of the Swallows"

A flock of swallows swirl and dive outside the artist's window. Balla has recreated their speed and movement by placing them in precise sequence, one after another. He appears to have included the rigidity of the shutters to contrast their motionlessness with the birds' continuous movement.

Balla painted a series of swallow paintings during his visit to Dusseldorf from 1912 to 1913. The picture is a good example of the work of the Italian Futurists, who were primarily concerned with depicting motion as a symbol for the dynamism of the modern world. Balla publicly declared his affiliation to the Futurist movement in March 1910.

With Gino Severini, Umberto Boccioni and Carlo Carra he developed the notion of depicting movement by presenting the same form over and over again, like the stills from a video tape. From 1913 Balla moved away from this style of painting, and developed a more figurative approach.

Review: "LITTLE ASHES"

If you were in Madrid during the 1920s, what would you do? Go to university, engage in underage drinking and perform sodomy on your classmates. "Little Ashes" focuses on three emerging young men; you could call these three the Musketeers: artist Salvador Dali, filmmaker Luis Bunel and writer Federico Garcia Lorca. Now the movie started out a tad bit slow with Salvador Dali racing Dracula-style through the wilderness in a horse drawn carriage. Upon arrival the other students are amazed and dumbfounded of Dali: pail, long nails, shaggy black hair, pencil-thin mustache and Elizabethan attire. Skittish and standoffish, Dali is a recluse until he purposely "opens' his door and Bunel barges in. Well after a few drinks and a formal introduction to Lurca the movie begins to pick up pace. The three become inseparable, forming the social elite at University, drinking on a nightly basis and debating about jazz, Paris, and the avant-garde. An attraction forms between Dali and Lurca and he fails to realize the attention his friend Margarita has for him. After a vacation in Cadaques with Dali's family, a kiss in the open sea and everything changes forever.....

With astounding cinematography, amazing costume design and historical references to the on-going war, "Little Ashes" was made for the visual intellectual in mind. Those who are fans of independent and art house films will surely enjoy it immensely. I was pleasantly surprised of the story of Dali and found myself researching him once leaving the show. More surprisingly was the boldness of Lurca and his obvious affection in such a time when sodomy could land a man 15 years in prison. Now if I can see the the Van Gogh/Paul Gaugin love story in which one of them loses an earlobe...hmmm....

VOLTA, the Basel-based art fair for new and emerging art is back in New York for Armory Arts Week at its central location at 7W 34th street. A perfect complement to its sister fair, The Armory Show, VOLTA NY will showcase 78 solo artist presentations, inspired by this year's curatorial theme, "Age of Anxiety," a reflection of our present moment, located in the city where our financial drama was born and is being played out.

In addition to its primary exhibition, VOLTA NY announces several additional special projects that further its tradition of highlighting local working artists-unrepresented by exhibiting galleries-that will take place in and around its midtown home as well as other locations.

A collaboration between VOLTA NY, Sketch Gallery, London, and the Tribeca and Soho Grand hotels, the film and installation project A New Stance for Tomorrow, curated by Victoria Brooks & Natalie Kovacs, moves from inside VOLTA NY's midtown elevators to various locations inside New York's famed Tribeca Grand Hotel, located at 2 Avenue of the Americas and Church Street. Concentrating on alternative visions and innovations by artists, designers and filmmakers from the 1950s to now, A New Stance for Tomorrow includes screenings, site-specific design, sound art and performative installation. The film programme, on view in the Tribeca Grand's screening room, includes work by Adrian Blackwell, Byron Broadbent, Michel de Broin, Charles & Ray Eames, Tim Etchells, Sylvie Fleury, Noam Gonick & Luis Jacob, Claire Hooper, Pierre Joseph & Philippe Parreno, Yves Klein, Oswaldo Macia, Simon Martin, Mathieu Mercier, Alain Resnais, Pia Rönicke, Robert Stadler, Mika Taanila, and Andrea Zittel. In the Sanctum visitors can view The Wild Flowers of Manitoba by Noam Gonick and Luis Jacob, a geodesic dome structure that functions as theater, screening room and performance space.
