Featuring Works by Duane Michals, Andre Kertesz, Cindy Sherman, Barbara Morgan, Phillipe Halsman and Others
Doyle New York will offer an auction of Photographs on Monday, November 3, 2008. The public is invited to the exhibition on view from Thursday, October 30 through Sunday, November 2. Doyle is located at 175 East 87th Street in Manhattan.
Early photography in the sale includes images of China in the 1860s by John Thomson, a view of Yosemite attributed to Carleton Watkins, and a collection of decorated Union Cases, many with their daguerreotypes intact.
Featured in the auction is a selection of gelatin silver prints by Barbara Morgan, including a series of Martha Graham performing her Letter to the World. American modernism is further represented by vintage prints by W. Eugene Smith, studies of silkworms and leaves by Margaret Bourke-White, Lucidagrams by Arthur Siegel, and a view of Harold Grieve's office in Hollywood by Margrethe Mather. The sale will also offer avant-garde works from France, Germany and Czechoslovakia, including images of industry in the 1920s by Else Thalemann, nudes by Frantisek Drtikol, shadow studies by Raoul Hausmann, and images from the Paris series by André Kertész. Many of these are vintage prints signed or stamped by the photographers.
From the Kulchur Queen Collection comes one of Sandy Skoglund's most recognizable tableaus, Revenge of the Goldfish, printed in 1980. Contemporary photographs will also feature a sequence entitled Mistaken Identity by Duane Michals, beach images by Michael Kenna, a portrait by Cindy Sherman, and a seascape in subtle tones of gray by Lynn Davis.
